Within the African Union, there are six regions: North Africa, West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa, and an additional region known as the "Sixth Region," representing the African Diaspora.
The concept of this "Sixth Region" is enshrined in the African Union's constitution. In 2003, at the conclusion of the AU Summit, Heads of State declared (14 (XVIII) add.): "The African Union (...) decides to recognize the African Diaspora as a significant entity contributing to the economic and social development of the continent."
Officially launched on July 1st, 2018, during the African Union Summit in Mauritania, the State is already recognized by Mauritania, the Maroon States of Jamaica, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and an increasing number of African and Diaspora states are expressing willingness to collaborate with the State of the African Diaspora.
